Battle Abbey is an abbey complex built on the site of the 1066 Battle of Hastings dedicated to St Martin. The Abbot's Great Hall and some of the grounds make up the Battle Abbey School, the rest is cared for by English Heritage and is open to the public.
The church was finished about 1094 and remodeled in the late 13th century but all but destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries by KIng Henry VIII.
An audio tour is available to guide you around parts of the abbey and battlefield. The place where King Harold is said to have died it marked by a stone slab beside a French monument.
A small cinema runs a film that tells the story of the great battle and interactive displays help to illustrate a picture of England at the time of the conquest.
