The National Portrait Gallery opened in 1856 and was the first portrait art gallery in the world. It displays a collection of portraits of historically important and famous British people spanning over five centuries.
The Portrait Café serves a selection of hot and cold meals, snacks and drinks. The Portrait Restaurant and Bar is a rooftop restaurant with views over London that serves breakfast, lunch, and afternoon tea. Evening meals are available on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Late Shift Bar is open of Thursday and Fridays.
The Bookshop selling books on British history, biography, art, photography and costume and children's books. The Gift Shop, beside the main entrance, has a wide variety of gifts and items related to the galleries collection. There is also an online shop available.
There are facilities for the disabled and the site is fully accessible.
