The Science Museum, founded in 1857, is home to over 300,000 items such as the world's first jet engine, a reconstruction of Francis Crick and James Watson's model of DNA, and Charles Babbage's Difference Engine.
The items are displayed over seven floors covering subjects such as: The Science and Art of Medicine, Veterinary History, The Science and Art of Medicine, Flight, Science History, New Scientific Discoveries, Computing, Energy, Mathematics, Atmosphere, Agriculture, Materials, Cosmos & Culture, Sound ,Time, Telecommunications, Energy Hall, Space, Code Breaking, Force Fields, Health and many others.
The Science Museum is also made up of galleries some of which are permanent and some of which are temporary.
The museum has large shop selling an extensive range of books, scientific equipment, experiments, gifts and toys.
The museum has three cafés: the Energy Café, the Dana Café and the Media Space Café, all serving hot and cold snacks and drinks. The Deep Blue Restaurant serves family meals. There is also the Shake Bar and picnic areas.
